Layoff and Shoot

Setup

  • A goal with a keeper. A line of shooters with balls about 25 yards out, slightly off centre.
  • One striker standing on the edge of the box with their back to goal.

How it works

  1. The shooter passes firmly into the striker's feet.
  2. The striker lays it off with one touch into the shooter's path.
  3. The shooter steps onto it and strikes first time.
  4. The striker spins and follows the shot in for any rebound.
  5. Shooter becomes the new striker; striker joins the back of the line.

Coaching points

  • Strong first touch: lay it off softly with the inside of the foot, out in front of the shooter.
  • Step onto it and strike: keep your head and knee over the ball to keep it low.
  • Always follow the shot. Most goals at youth level come from rebounds.

Progressions

  • Add a defender behind the striker.
  • Shooter must hit the target in the far half of the goal.
  • Striker can choose: lay it off, or turn and shoot.
